Terrain Parks

A lot of people have been asking on here what to expect from the terrain park crew this year. Well, I finally have some answers for you.

For starters, the parks will be located in the traditional areas. On opening day you can expect at least a 3 feature line to include boxes and wall ride. Every Friday throughout the season the park will have 1-3 new features. Something fresh every weekend!

We're planning a lot of great events. First off, the New Year's Eve Rail Jam. This competition will be very different from those in the past. Click here for the details. If you want to participate, you gotta plan ahead! Open rail jams, slopestyle, kid's only comp and some goofy stuff are all in the works. Information on that to come.

Take a moment this weekend to say hi to Joe Pope, our new park manager! Joe has 10 years of park building experience. We're going to see a lot of great things from him.

Hi Joe Pope!

When you say 1-3 new features, does that mean adding on to what's there? Or are you going to take down what you have and install 1-3 new things?

The snow seems to stop. Is this gonna be a problem? Or will the cold weather keep the powder around till Saturday?

It was so cold today that I wouldn't worry at all about snow melting. The highs are only up to the 20s

The features will be changed up every week, not completely newly constructed features every week. That would get pretty expensive. But we are looking at a few brand new features in January.

New features will be determined in January. And the New Year's Eve feature is a secret...for now. Tryouts are only for those that can attend the New Year's Eve Rail Jam. An open rail jam will be held on January 9th.

Joe Pope is going to make the park a-lot better this year I am sure of it. I went up for the Terrain Park hiring clinic (sadly I was the only person late and did not get the job)it was a-lot of fun and I have all confidence the people hired are the right people for the job. I hope to make it up a few times but I cannot afford a season pass this year so old P is calling my name! lol Maybe ill practice some natural terrain setups out there, I have alot of Ideas so anyone who does not understand old P and does not have the cash to hit the resort this year please come out and have some low budget essay fun with me!! lol

Best of luck to everyone at Powderhorn! Thanks for the awesome early jib sesh!

Seems like long on hope but short on answers. Maybe should have stuck to the 17th opening so would be more stable in both snow and answers.

How about terrain parks in other areas of the mountain where other kids and novices can hit some natural jumps and rollers, like they have in CB, Steamboat, and Telluride etc, besides the beginner run. Having one main area under the lift is intimidating and the regular crowd ACTS like they own that section. Plus it doesn't make sense from a PR standpoint to have young adults smoking and dropping F-bombs right under the lift while families are riding above.

Spreading the terrain park options across the mountain would decrease these issues, especially since an important quality of Powderhorn is the family-like atmosphere.

snowmaking is the main problem they are going to focus on the main area until there is sufficient snow around the mountain to allow them to expand into different areas of the mtn. Please be patient. We all discussed the lift area and its intimidation factor but at this point its up to the owners exactly what happens. Snow making is on that particular run and at 50 bucks an hour they do not want to be catting around snow for a set up on a different run at this point. Always remember the snow in the terrain parks takes an extra beating and also gets groomed down and therefore reducing the base almost daily. The only place you can maintain a park at this point in the season is where it is currently located.

I agree about with you about having some nice rollers and smaller jumps for beginners to practice on. Crested Butte also is one of my personal favorites especially because of the multiple parks with differing difficulty levels, I also brought up the natural terrain factor at the Park hiring clinic and Joe is all for that, but keep in mind its ultimately up to the owners what happens. Please put in a good word and suggestions and spend more time in the park so that the owners see the need or equity in expanding the park system. If all they hear is negative they are not going to invest more hours and equipment.....
