2nd Place the Ski Patrol Snowmobile

3rd Place Snow Snake by Carl Felling

Maverick's Picks

Once again Maverick has given us his list of the places to be and things to eat at Powderhorn. He was spotted antler-deep in the snow all over the mountain this week.

Run: Equalizer has been my variety run this week. First, I hit the Top Cut terrain park at the top of Equalizer just to show off a little. Then I work my legs through the bumps. Just when I'm getting tired, it mellows out into a fun groomer.

Food: The Sunset Grille now has specials every weekend. Yesterday I filled up on a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato bisque soup. Mmm mmm good.

Gear: The Alpine Trader is starting to have lots of specials on winter gear. I bought a new coat and got a pair of gloves for half price! Not going to lie, I look pretty awesome.

Apres: My plan for Sunday is to relax at the Sunset Bar and listen to the live band. The Goodman Shaffer Project is playing from 3-6pm.

Dummy Jump Postponed

Due to a TON of snow, the Dummy Jump will be postponed until tomorrow; same time, same place. So there's still time to build a dummy! Please have it to the mountain by noon tomorrow so it can be on display. Cost is $10. Powderhorn gift cards are up for grabs!
Here's some of the dummies on display today

Powder Day!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a powder day in full swing right now! If you can't make it today, definitely get here tomorrow.

As of 9:20am we've had 12" of new snow and it's still going strong. We could get 8" more today and 5" tonight. For those that enjoy the backcountry, we are under an avalanche watch so please take that into consideration!

Cross Country Skiing

A small group of us rented cross country skis from the rental shop and checked out the West Bench trail today. We skied from the West End lift to the Take Four Quad and it was beautiful! A couple of us had been working here for years but had never done it. Today we set out to fix that.

How to go:
Cross country rental package $25
Snowshoes $11
Single ride lift ticket $10
Check in and out with our ski patrol huts at the top of each lift. They can also direct you to the trailheads. The trail is well marked with blue diamonds and is usually well packed.

Engineering Skills Needed

Almost every department is building a dummy for the Dummy Jump this Saturday. Many are being built under the cover of total secrecy somewhere deep in the garages of Grand Junction. Only one picture has surfaced...this is the "snow snake" built by Carl Felling of ski school. According to Carl it will be performing a back flip off the jump.

Much trash talking and preliminary boasts of success are filling the break rooms this week. Not to be outdone, we in Administration are attempting to put a dummy together on Friday night. That's right, those that actually planned this event a month ago are building a dummy the night before. Chances of success are slim, but the effort will be admirable. Ours will consist of random things we've gathered from our houses and backyards- old Salomon skis, a go-kart frame and a large stuffed animal. If you have anything to add, or ideas for our dummy, drop us a comment!

Maverick's Picks

Maverick just came around again, bragging of all he's been out doing. This guy has the easiest job ever.

Run: Watching all the bump competitions in the Olympics has inspired me. I've been out practicing on Hooker. If I can't get it together, I'll be taking that new Spring Bumps class next month.

Food: The meatball sub over at the Skier's Union Cafe is my fuel. The meatballs are the size of my hoof!

Gear: I rented some cross country equipment from the rental shop and checked out the West Bench trail on top. Found myself a great new grazing area for summer!

Apres: I just discovered the Bota Box wine at the Sunset Bar. This is premium California wine in a box! They're made of 100% recylced paper. And these things are huge. They're the equivalent of 4 bottles of wine. A glass helped nurse my jello legs after skiing laps on Hooker.

Brand Spankin New

Sorry for the break in blog posts. I escaped the state of Colorado for some research at a steep mountain in that other square-shaped state.

Anyhoo, we're all really excited around here for the next two events as they are new! Tomorrow is the first ever 3 Jump Jackpot terrain park competition. The park crew has build a 3 jump line never before seen at Powderhorn AND a quarter pipe! Many of you gravity resistant skiers and riders have been asking for a quarter pipe for awhile. We're excited to offer it. The competition will be 2 divisions: 12 & under, 13 & up. It's $15 to enter, under 18 must have parent's signature. Registration will be next to the Guest Services desk at noon, competition starting at 1pm. Chance to win a Burton snowboard, Salomon 1080 skis or tons of other great prizes.

Then, next weekend is the Dummy Jump. We've talked about this quite a bit on the blog so check out the info and YouTube video. Then make sure you have your dummy space reserved with April Nichols at 970-268-5168. Bring your dummy for display on the deck at noon. The show starts at 4:30pm.

Any questions? Let us know in the comment box!

Snow Totals

I've run out of creative titles for blog posts talking about snow. So forget my attempts at humor. The whole point is that it's snowing yet again! And pretty hard. We could have 8" or more by the end of the weekend.

Here's how the snow has added up so far this winter:

October 24"
November 6"
December 77"
January 39"
February to-date (actually to the hour) 4"

That puts us at exactly 150" so far, but that's being added to as I type. It's snowing at approximately an inch per hour right now. Have fun!

Maverick's Picks

Maverick has been doing his faithful duty and investigating the mountain regularly.

Run: Yoohoo is a fun run that's perfect for those just learning to ski trees. It's my recommendation for your first run on a powder day.

Food: I've been taking advantage of the meal deal at the Sunset Grille. Hamburger, fries and a soda for $7.25.

Gear: I got in a fight with a small tree branch ruining the lens on my goggles. But the Alpine Trader saved the day. My new Native goggles are polarized. I might even wear them fishing this summer.

Park Feature: I've been doing my last minute training for Vancouver on the 3 jump line on Maverick. The Olympic committee hasn't returned my phone calls...but I'm sure they're just really busy. Look for me riding with Shaun White!

Apres: On a sunny day I enjoy a frosty glass of Palisade Red Truck out on the deck. Working on my goggle tan.

Useless Trivia

Today at noon we are exactly halfway through the 2009-10 season.

Where does the time go?? Probably to the same place that all the socks go when they disappear from the dryer.

Get out and play, only half the season left!

*Cough* Cough * Gasp*

Day 621 of the inversion...or at least it feels like it.

It's currently 29 degrees in Grand Junction....and 36 degrees at Powderhorn. In addition, our air is clean.

Just something to think about.

The Word is Out

Ah it's good to be back at the mountain. Many of us have been in Denver the last week missing out on all this great snow. I've been told multiple times how good the snow was this weekend. Thanks for rubbing it in.

The word is definitely out all over the state that Powderhorn is the place to be. Tons of people in Denver would tell us how they've heard we have all the snow. Just a couple were slightly hostile telling us to quit hogging it all. Hey, we don't make the decisions on snow allocation!

The Daily Sentinel, Huffington Post, and Aspen Post have all reported on our great conditions. Many people are discovering Powderhorn for the first time! So you locals might have a few more Powderhorn first-timers asking you to show them around. You have our permission to be strategic...keep your stash for yourself.
