Fighting Sleep

It's currently almost 11pm and I'm in my office fighting to stay awake. Around midnight I'll be hopping in a snowcat with one of our groomers to (hopefully) make an interesting Friday Feed. The plan is to interview Justin Jansen as he works and find out more about his job and the technique involved in grooming.

It should be posted by 10am tomorrow and I'll try to snap a few pictures to include.
Happy dreaming!

4th Annual TeleFest

The freeheelers are taking over this Saturday!

Registration will be at the ski school desk. You'll get your discounted ticket, t-shirt, and can sign up for the clinics, race and party.

The party will be held at the Bear's Den and includes beer from Kannah Creek Brewery and appetizers from the Wildewood Restaurant. We'll also be playing The Pact by Powderwhore Productions.

Summit Canyon Mountaineering is providing free tele demos and REI is providing free snowshoe demos.

Snow is Back

Cold temperatures are back bringing light, fluffy snow back to Powderhorn. We've had 14" in the last few days. Currently it's snowing pretty hard and the flakes are that perfect fluffy/light consistency...I'm sure there's a better word for that.

As soon as patrol can get on top, they'll get me a new reading of the stake and I'll post an update.

UPDATE: We've picked up another inch since this morning. I'm very inarticulate today so I give up. Shoot dang it's goooood out there! Just got inside from a couple runs...here's the pics.

Found this tree with bear claw marks all over it. The story would be cooler had I found it on Bear Claw, but it was in Sven's Bend.

Also found an old avalanche pit that someone dug. Good time to remind you that avy danger is high right now!

Here's a line that's just begging to be skied! (in Yoohoo)

Safety Week Video

Check out our video on the Skier's Responsibility Code- "The Moose Is Loose"

Bring On The Snow

Looks like the end of this high pressure is in sight! We'll be happy to show it the door. The sunny skies have been nice but it's time for some new snow!

The mountain is currently holding up very well despite warm temperatures. Coverage on the slopes is very good. During the week we are limiting our grooming to main runs and sometimes every other night rather than every night. This helps the snowpack. But hopefully we'll be dealing with powder very soon!

Know the Lingo 2

It's Tuesday, and Tuesdays are generally lame. It's not Monday but you're still nowhere near the weekend. So let's have a little fun with the post today. A couple years ago we had a post on goofy ski lingo. See that original list here.

Here's a few more:

Death Cookies- those bumpy spots leftover by a snowcat that can grab you and toss you to the ground before you know what's happening. One of our groomers refers to them as Cat Crap and he tries not to leave any behind.

Russian Missile- when a snowboard or ski gets loose and rockets down the hill.

Panty Tree- the poor pine or aspen tree that contains piles of mardi gras beads, bras and underwear. One of the most random ski resort traditions.

Chicken Chaser- fast and out of control turns in a wide, survival-mode stance.

Snow Snake- those invisible and fast little buggers that jump up and bite you causing a crash out of nowhere.

Snowflake- one who shirks their duties to go skiing or snowboarding.

Snirt- early season snow with dirt spots showing.

Double Eject- When both ski bindings release and you're looking like Superman.

Yipes!

What the Moose?

If you were up at the mountain today, you may have seen a snowboarder that stood out from the crowd. That was Maverick the Moose, our goofy mascot. He can get away with pretty much anything on account of he's bigger than the rest of us.

Maverick helped us out today as we shot a safety video in preparation for National Safety Week (begins next week). We discovered that he doesn't really understand the Skier's Responsibility Code...so he made a pretty good case study. We'll have the video done and posted on the website by end of next week.

We also got a few photos today of people snagging first tracks on Bear Claw. It was only 5 degrees out but this group hiked over to West End and got the first few chairs of the day.

Phillips 66 Deal

Just wanted to give a little clarification-an article in the Daily Sentinel recently made the Phillips 66 deal sound like it was for 1 free lift ticket but in fact, the deal gives you a Buy 1, Get 1 Free lift ticket. It's valid Monday-Thursdays. For all the details (station locations, dates, etc) go to www.skifreecolorado.com

West End Closed

Just trying to put the word out anywhere we can, the West End lift will be closed today. Due to that, lift tickets will be reduced to $30.

There are some tower adjustments that need to be made. It's our goal to get it all done today so everything is ready for the weekend. At least it's a good opportunity to let the snow pile up over there. Go for first tracks tomorrow!

UPDATE: 9:30AM We now have 7" of new snow, still snowing hard!
UPDATE: 10:30AM Cannonball is now open!

The Friday Feed for this week is up. We cover current deals, snow conditions, and what goes on behind the scenes around here. Clicky click right here.

Caption Contest

You might recognize this photo from a blog post last season, but I'm using it again to kick off a photo caption contest. Place your best caption in the comments and the winner will get something....don't know what yet but something cool!

If you have a fun photo to submit for future contests, email it to ski@powderhorn.com

Time to Breathe

The holiday period is our busiest time of the season. Now that all the kids have gone back to school and everyone is forced back to work, we are taking a deep breath around here. If anyone knows a good remedy for dark circles under the eyes, I'm all ears.

We won't rest for long though. After this weekend, we have an event every weekend for the rest of the season. We're also working on more deals for the text club, bringing back Magic on the Mountain (Magic 93.1) with fun contests every Friday, and looking forward to more storms.

Hopefully you're all having a great Monday after the holidays! Sometimes "the day after" a vacation can feel like a sucker punch. May your voicemail say "no new messages", your inbox be empty, and the coffee be strong!

11 Shreddin

Each year we partner up with KKCO 11 News to offer you the 11 Shreddin series. You ask a snowboarding question, Sam Farnsworth will team up with one of our professional instructors to show you how it's done, and KKCO will air it each week. If your question gets selected, you'll win a lift ticket!

Post your questions on Sam's blog right here. We'll select the first question and start filming this week.

1/2 Friday Feed

In this week's podcast you get to hear from the youngest competitior at the New Year's Eve Rail Jam plus the head pyro technician from the Torchlight Parade & Fireworks show.

Listen here

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2009! Some of us are discovering a whole new level of tired this morning. Many people have rallied though and are hitting the slopes.

We had a ton of fun yesterday with all the festivities. Here is the photo gallery from the New Year's Eve Rail Jam.

I plan on sleeping in tomorrow, so the Friday Feed will be posted later today. It'll have interviews with the head pyro technician and some of the riders in the rail jam.
