Park Update

Here's an update on our terrain parks, straight from The Pope...

As of today, January 26, 2011, we have three park areas open with a total of 20 features.

You may have noticed that we were able to build our first and second jump in Maverick park. We will be adding more features to Maverick, and all the parks as time and snow permits. We are really looking forward to the Three Jump Jackpot coming up in the beginning of February. The “Three Jump” is our premiere slopestyle park competition held in Maverick.

We have lots of other plans for the park system this year at Powderhorn. We hope that you, our guests, will continue to enjoy the features. We certainly enjoy building, and enjoy riding them ourselves.

Our focus for the next two weeks before the Three Jump Jackpot is to try and finish Maverick. We really need mother nature’s help on this one. We have pushed all the snow we have on Maverick to get our first two jumps…However we need a third…Otherwise it won’t quite be a “three jump” jackpot.

We are also planning on adding a wall ride and a quarter pipe somewhere in the upcoming weeks.

We are really excited about our new coats this year. Ride Snowboards really came through for us, and we are stoked. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to stop and talk with one of the park rangers. We are the guys in the peacock colored coats. We would love to chat it up with ya!!!

Until next time,
Have fun and be safe,

Joe Pope

Maverick's Picks

If you've seen a very wild moose lately grinning from antler to antler, that's our Maverick. He's been getting more ski days than all of us...and loving every minute. Here are his picks for the week:

Run: Top Cut terrain park to Equalizer. I've been practicing my jibs on the new natural features then bombing down the Equalizer face.
Gear: My new Smith helmet from the Alpine Trader has been tested...from the above mentioned activities. They just got in a new shipment!
Food: Any of the burgers at the Skiers Union Cafe are incredible! No wonder they've been featured on Oprah as one of the best burgers in the U.S.
Apres: The Sunset Bar has been hoping with frequent live music and drink specials. Margarita Mondays are always a good cure for a case of the Mondays.

Deal: The Inn at Wildewood has a Midweek Getaway Special right now. Just $89 Monday-Thursdays AND you get 2 half-price lift tickets for the next day. Only valid through the end of the month so get your reservation. Affordable ski break with no lift lines! I have my room blocked out for several days. You're welcome to bunk with me, but I do snore a little...

Uphill/Downhill Race

These people have the lungs of an ox!
As part of the TeleFest, the uphill/downhill race took place this morning on Wonderbump. Competitors had to run to their skis, put skins on, skin all the way up Wonderbump, rip the skins of and ski down.
They completed this in the amount of time it takes me to put my boots on.

Men's winner
Chris Pipkin

Women's winner
Cynthia Malleck

Party In Progress: Snow Bar Update

Behold the beauty that is Snow Bar, snow lovers! You can thank our awesome Terrain Park Crew for creating the venue for an epic aprés ski party—a gigantic snow fort! The crew was up until midnight smoothing out the dance floor, building walls, and carving out the top shelf for the bar. And they were back at it bright and early this morning. "We're working hard so we can play hard Saturday night," said Jerrick (above) of the Terrain Park Crew. Jerrick, also known as "J-Rock" will be knockin' some socks off with his DJ dexterity the night of the big bash too! You don't wanna miss this! Party starts at 4 p.m. January 22.

1.19.11 Update

This week's podcast covers the details of Snow Bar and a little welcome to the Freeskier Magazine film crew.

Free your heel, free your mind

That's the tele motto.
Ready for a little freedom? The 6th Annual TeleFest is this Saturday.

It all begins with the uphill/downhill race at 8:30am. Those with an extra set of lungs will be skinning up Wonderbump then skiing down. You'd think this would take awhile right? Well last years winner did it under 25 minutes!

Clinics begin at 10am and are available for first timers all the way through advanced. Summit Canyon Mountaineering will be offering free tele demos located right outside the lodge. This is the perfect day to let your heel loose for the first time.

Of course you can't have a bunch of skiers together without a party. The day wraps up with a bash supported by Kannah Creek Brewing Co. Prizes include GoPro helmet cams, Black Diamond skis and other swag. Oh yea, and there's this little thing called the Snow Bar happening.

Costumes are also encouraged...

Maverick's Picks

As usual, Maverick has been out playing and wreaking havoc (see the safety video below). He took time out of his goofing off to swing by with his picks for the week.

Run: I've really been enjoying my namesake, Maverick, this week. I carve, sign a few autographs, and hit the recently opened Maverick Park.

Food: The meal deals at the Sunset Grille are perfect for a quick and easy lunch. I got a burger, fries and fountain drink for $8.25.

Gear: The Alpine Trader is offering 10% off base layers all week in support of National Ski Safety Awareness Week. Remember, cotton kills!

Apres: I'm saving up all my apres action for this Saturday at the Snow Bar! From 4-8pm I'll be shakin' my groove thing.

Safety Meeting!

Alright skiers and shredders what's just as awesome as skipping work/school for a Powderhorn pow' day? Why, doing it safely of course! This week (January 15-23) is the National Ski Association's Safety Awareness Week and we are honoring it by making an example out of our buddy, Maverick the Moose. Maverick managed to break all seven rules of NSAA's "Your Responsibility Code" and we caught it all on tape. Man! What should we do with this misbehaving Moose?? We're confident that he has learned his lesson... so make sure you KNOW THE CODE too!

Take what you've learned from Maverick and enter the kids poster contest! A brand new helmet is the prize up for grabs in the nation-wide contest. Entry forms are available at Guest Services.

Snowshoeing

The great thing about snowshoeing is that it's a winter sport that needs little instruction. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.

We have snowshoe and cross country trails here at Powderhorn for those that want to take a little break from sliding. Our rental shop has full cross country packages and snowshoes available. Stop in anytime and rent a setup for use on our trails or West Bench, Mesa Lakes and Skyway systems. If using the Powderhorn snowshoe trail, please check in with Guest Services first for directions and details.

Did you know you can burn around 500 calories per hour snowshoeing?

Happy trekking!

Palisade Cafe & Grill

WARNING: If you have a strong fear of clowns...skip this post.

Last week you saw our featured business of the week was Home Loan State Bank who offered prizes to those who found miss Margaret hidden out on the slopes (see previous post). We thought she was pretty creepy.

Well not to be outdone, the Palisade Cafe & Grill, who is our featured business this week, is hiding this guy out on the slopes each day....

Find him and bring him back to their booth in the lodge to receive swag such as hats and t-shirts. I'm thinking that a random clown hidden in the woods is material for a B movie style horror flick. But since many people are afraid of clowns, it really increases the chances of winning for those who are not!

Ski & Find

As part of Home Loan State Bank business of the week, you could win a $25 gift card to Powderhorn....just by finding Margaret C. Manichester.

This is quite possibly the creepiest doll ever! If you see her hiding in the trees, snag her (after you've stopped crying) because you win! Take little Margaret to the Home Loan booth in the Sunset Grille to redeem your prize. The hunt is on Friday and Saturday.

Maverick's Picks

After last week's storm, I've never seen a happier moose in all my life. Maverick just may be the luckiest employee we have. Well, if you can call him that.

Run: Any of the glades. Mad Dog has been superb! Oh and Bear Claw is now open!

Food: I'm one week into my new year's resolution to eat a little healthier. So I've really enjoyed the black bean burger and sweet potato fries from the Sunset Grille.

Gear: With all this new snow I had to go get new goggles. The Alpine Trader has a wide variety of styles with affordable prices.

Apres: The Skier's Union Cafe & Bar has $2 PBRs. Enough said!
