In this week's podcast we have an interview with Maverick the Moose. He's quite the trash talker when it comes to the Great Mascot Race.

The Great Mascot Race

Coming up on March 7th we're having a new event- The Great Mascot Race. It's designed purely for everyone's entertainment! Imagine a dozen random creatures flying down the hill competing against each other for fame & glory...

Oh it will be good.

If your company, group or organization has a mascot and would like to be involved, email me at sallen@powderhorn.com. You'll receive 2 free lift tickets for participating plus your organization will be included in our press releases for the event. We're inviting local television stations and newspapers here for the race. If you don't have a member of your organization that's brave enough to race in the suit, we can help with advance notice.

Conditions Report

Most of you know we've had some weird weather in the last 24 hours. Ski Patrol just gave me an updated report since we did not have groomers on the mountain last night (and subsequently no stake reading). We received 7" on top total out of this storm. Our base is at 46". There was no snowfall on the lower half of the mountain. Instead we got rained on.

This leads many people to believe that conditions are marginal at best. Well I'm heading out right now to debunk this myth! I'm going to go take honest photos of several different runs so you can see exactly what it looks like (past our webcam). I'll post the pics and soon as I get back inside.

UPDATE: It's great skiing out there! The snow is soft and really fun to carve. I didn't see any of what we call "cancer spots"- areas where dirt is showing and can quickly spread.

Happy Valentine's Day

We're feeling the love today! Mother Nature is lavishing it on us with powder. Right now you can't even see the mountain it's snowing so hard. They're calling for 10-18 inches through the next 24 hours.

Hopefully you're spending Valentine's Day with your significant other in the powder. That's a much better gift that a giant teddy bear. If you're celebrating "Singles Awareness Day" today, we hope the powder lifts your spirits!

Blower

No bad luck here despite the fact that it's Friday the 13th! It's perfect blower powder out there! Here's a couple quick pics between face shots.

This is a cool site that gives you data from a weather station on top of the mesa near our summit.

TMFF POSTPONED

We've just made the call that we must postpone the Thunder Mtn Freestyle Fest until Saturday, February 21st. There's so much snow, it would be impossible to get the new features set and everything ready for competition tomorrow.

We'll save all the prizes (and maybe get a few more) for next Saturday!

Powder Day!

It's amazing up here! I'm in our administration offices at the bottom of the parking lots and I can barely see the lodge. We're up to a foot of new snow now, all overnight last night! That makes 27" so far this week.

There will be no Friday Feed today because all you'd hear is us freaking out about how good the snow is. And honestly, I want to go ski it myself! I'll snap a few pictures and post them later on today.

We also have a lot to get ready for this weekend! The terrain park crew is going to have to pull long hours today to dig out the park and have it ready for tomorrow.

Oh and the skis we're giving away to the top skier tomorrow are SWEET! They're the new K2 Extremes park skis. The snowboard will be in our hands today but is most likely a K2 or Atomic.

Lunch Special

This week's lunch special at the Wildewood Restaurant is:

Powder Pasta
Sauteed shrimp in a tomato pesto cream sauce over a bed of penne pasta
$11.95

Race you there!

The Random Post

It's time once again for that blog post where we throw a bunch of information at you that we think you might want to know. It's better than writing 6 posts in one day!

- Most importantly, we're looking at snowfall tonight all the way through to Saturday. Get ready for freshies!

- Actually this is more important: the Higher Love Fundraiser is this Saturday. We're donating $1 from every lift ticket sold to the Latimer House Counseling & Advocacy Center. Grand Junction Subaru is also throwing in $300. Help us support this important organization!

- The 3rd Annual Thunder Mtn. Freestyle Fest is Saturday. It's the biggest terrain park competition of the season. I'm picking up a new snowboard and skis today for the top skier and rider! They'll also get $100 cold hard cash. I'm also buying about 100 hot dogs to grill up in the park for competitors. Mmmmmm mystery meat.

- Last Saturday, Maverick the Moose raced Pinky the Pig from Rib City Grille in the CDA Ski Challenge. I never heard who won...but no doubt it was Maverick.

- And finally, we received a Flat Stanley from Mrs. Fay's 3rd grade class at Chipeta Elementary. Oh the things he will see! We'll send you guys some great pictures of Stanley at Powderhorn!

Check Out the Conditions

Here's a little video from today so you can see what it's looking like out there...

Twitter

If you're a Twitter-er, check us out!
http://twitter.com/SkiPowderhorn/

We post updates all day long, especially when it's snowing!

And It Continues

Still snowing! We've had 12" in the last 48 hours (technically in the last 36 hours) and it's still going. We'll get some pictures and video today so you can see better what the conditions are like.

FYI- got a question on the snow report regarding the time. The snow reading off the stake is done around 5am. But we have to put our snow report out to the public by 6am. So that's why we say "this is the 5am snow report" on the snow line. It's the time the reading was taken for new snowfall. Clear as mud?

New Snow

YAAAAY! We received 6 inches of snow mainly all overnight and it's snowing right now. We'll get some pictures so you can see the conditions. Also check out the webcam.

UPDATE: 12:15PM 3 more inches since this morning, still snowing hard! Skiers right of Mad Dog Glade is mostly untouched and EPIC!

Aspen/Snowmass Open

One of our correspondents happened to be at Buttermilk yesterday on a day off and snagged these photos of the competition.
Olympic Bronze Medalist- JJ Thomas

Stomach Grumbles

I have to believe this was strategic. It's almost lunch-time and the manager of the Wildewood Restaurant just sent us all this email:

"The Wildewood Restaurant is going to begin running a weekly lunch special, in addition to our normal menu items. The special this week will be:
Sauteed artichoke hearts, spinach, portobella mushrooms, pinenuts, and fresh tomatoes in a white wine and garlic sauce, topped with asiago cheese and parsley. The special will run at $10.95 through Sunday Feb. 8. (its awesome if you add chicken to it!). Come check it out!"

My stomach actually just reacted to an email!

If yours did too, make sure to hit the Wildewood this weekend.

Time For Change

Here's some change we can all get onboard with- snow is back in the forecast! It's warm today but there's that familiar breeze we always get when a new system is coming. Warm days with soft snow are great...but I think we're all ready for another powder day.

SNOW DANCE!

If you need ideas, this guy has them all...

Showing Some Appreciaiton

It's that time of the season where we'd like to show all of you our appreciation. Whether you come back year after year, or this is your first season at Powderhorn, we are thankful to have you.

This Saturday is Guest Appreciation Day. Lift tickets will be just $30 for everyone (except 6 & under or 70+ since yours is already cheaper). We're also having a massive treasure hunt on the mountain. We'll be hiding 12 treasure chests that each have a different prize. If you find one, turn it in to Guest Services. You could score a season pass for next year, a Plus Card, a case of Pepsi, free food from the Wildewood Restaurant or other cool prizes. The Alpine Trader is offering 30% off when you show your season pass or lift ticket.

It's also the CDA Ski Challenge. This is a race that's open to everyone and the proceeds all benefit the work of Colorado Discover Ability. You'll get a t-shirt and lunch with your registration! Also check out their silent auction.

I'll post more info on other specials as they become available!

side note- our email system is down (the beauty of working in the mountains) so if you've sent an email in the last few days, we aren't ignoring you, we just can't get to it!

Good Job Phil!

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning ensuring us 6 more weeks of winter. That is if a giant rodent can be trusted....
